The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released updated guidelines for individuals seeking to claim Universal Credit benefits related to child support.
Detailed information is now available on the GOV.UK website outlining the additional assistance that may be accessible to those caring for children. If your first child was born prior to April 6, 2017, you may qualify for an added £339 per month under Universal Credit.
For children born on or after April 6, 2017, or for second children, the supplementary amount is £292.81. Generally, no extra payments are provided for third or subsequent children, with exceptions such as additional support for twins.
Additional payments will continue until August 31 following the child’s 16th birthday. Extended payments are possible until the child reaches 19 years if they are pursuing full-time education or approved training.
Families with disabled children may receive an extra monthly allowance regardless of the number of children.
Regarding work requirements and Universal Credit claims, the guidelines explain that the main carer’s status and the child’s age are determining factors.
A main carer must be designated, or single parents are automatically considered the main carer. Work obligations differ based on the child’s age, with no work expected when the youngest child is under one year old and preparation for work typically anticipated by age 3.
If not the main carer and not employed full-time, individuals are generally expected to seek full-time employment.
The guidelines also address reimbursement for up to 85% of childcare expenses for those working or preparing to work while receiving Universal Credit.
Claims for childcare costs, up to a maximum monthly amount of £1,031.88 for one child or £1,768.94 for two or more children, must be submitted through the Universal Credit account, allowing for up to three months of retrospective childcare claims.
Prompt reporting of childcare expenses is advised, as delays exceeding two months may impact reimbursement. Advance claims for up to three months of future childcare are accepted but require completion of the childcare service before reimbursement.
