If you’re experiencing slow broadband speeds, the reason might be simpler than you think. Recent findings from Uswitch reveal that many homeowners are unaware of the number of devices connected to their routers. On average, a British household is now equipped with approximately 16 web-connected gadgets scattered throughout the premises.

Certain devices, like video doorbells, remain constantly online, transmitting data over the internet. This continuous activity can lead to sluggish performance, affecting activities such as video conferencing or streaming services like Netflix, especially in homes with basic internet connections.

To understand broadband better, think of it as a road: the more traffic it handles, the slower it becomes. Properties with full-fibre connections offer wider “roads” that can accommodate increased traffic, whereas older copper cables may struggle to keep up.

Another issue arises from “phantom” devices – products that remain connected to the router despite being inactive. These devices often send and receive data periodically, even when not in use.

Uswitch advises some simple steps to enhance connectivity. Firstly, households with numerous smart devices, such as TVs, doorbells, speakers, plugs, and robot vacuums, may benefit from upgrading to faster full-fibre speeds. Additionally, identifying and disconnecting unused devices can lead to an immediate speed boost.

According to Max Beckett, a broadband expert at Uswitch, unused gadgets and sensors can congest the connection, causing buffering during tasks like streaming or gaming. It’s important to recognize that WiFi issues aren’t solely due to high online activity; some devices consume bandwidth even when idle for days.

Beckett recommends conducting a digital spring cleaning by disconnecting or powering down any unused devices. While a full-fibre broadband connection offers the best performance, managing connected devices and limiting simultaneous high-definition streaming can significantly improve the situation.
