Pressure Grows on Farage Over Racist Comments

One of Nigel Farage’s top deputies has declined to denounce a Reform candidate who suggested that David Lammy should return to the Caribbean. The pressure is increasing on Mr. Farage to take action following revelations that Chris Parry, the mayoral candidate for Hampshire and the Solent, implied that Lammy’s allegiance was not to the UK. In February, Parry posted on Twitter that Lammy should go back to the Caribbean, referencing a news story on slavery reparations. Lammy has urged Farage to address the discriminatory behavior within the party.

When questioned about the racism allegations, Reform MP Danny Kruger, who switched from the Conservatives to Reform, stated that without understanding the full context, he could not comment in detail and left the decision to Farage and party leadership. Kruger emphasized Parry’s public service background and expressed gratitude for his endorsement of Reform.

Keir Starmer highlighted the issue during PMQs, criticizing Farage for fostering chaos and division. Labour chair Anna Turley condemned the delay in addressing the racist comments and urged Farage to dismiss the candidate immediately. Kruger defended Reform, stating they condemn all forms of racism and trust that they are firmly against racial discrimination.

The controversy surrounding Parry’s comments emerged shortly after Ian Cooper, Reform’s council leader in Staffordshire, resigned amid accusations of making racist remarks online. Starmer pointed out the pattern of racism within Reform, citing instances in Hampshire and Staffordshire. Cooper’s party membership was revoked due to past racist comments, and he now serves as an independent council member.

Lammy reiterated his stance against racism and called on Farage to eradicate the outdated hate within the party. The Mirror has reached out to Reform UK for additional comments.
