“Trump Warns Zelensky: Peace Deal Hangs in Balance”

Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of their crucial meeting concerning the conflict in Ukraine. The US president and his Ukrainian counterpart are scheduled to convene in Florida this weekend. Zelensky disclosed his intention to present a new 20-point peace initiative during the meeting, emphasizing Kyiv’s anticipated push for security assurances from the US. The discussions are likely to encompass Ukraine’s proposal for a demilitarized “free economic zone” in certain parts of eastern Donbas that remain unconquered by Russia, as well as the operational aspects of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

In an interview with Politico on Friday, Trump emphasized his authority in approving any potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Responding to Zelensky’s latest proposition, Trump asserted, “He doesn’t have anything until I approve it,” further stating, “So we’ll see what he’s got.”

Despite his firm stance, Trump expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting. He stated, “I think it’s going to go good with him. I think it’s going to go good with [Vladimir] Putin,” indicating his eagerness to engage in dialogue with the Russian leader. While Russia has reported incremental progress in negotiations, they have refrained from commenting on Zelensky’s offer to withdraw troops from Donbas contingent on a reciprocal move by Moscow. Putin has insisted on full control over Donbas, including the unoccupied 25% of the Donetsk region, demanding Kyiv’s withdrawal from these areas.

In contrast to the original 28-point plan facilitated by the US in November, which involved ceding control of various regions to Moscow, the new 20-point proposal from Ukraine aims to demonstrate flexibility without compromising territorial integrity. However, Russia has shown no signs of relenting on its demand for complete authority over the region. Trump underscored Russia’s economic challenges, noting, “Their economy is in tough shape, very tough shape,” during his discussion with Politico.

Prior to the meeting, Zelensky confirmed that the 20-point plan is nearing completion, stating, “Our task is to ensure everything is 100% ready.” He also mentioned plans for a high-level meeting with President Trump in the near future, expressing optimism for progress before the year concludes. Additionally, Zelensky communicated a positive interaction with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, describing it as a fruitful dialogue.
