“UK Gov’t Pledges £50M for NHS Support in VAWG Crackdown”

The British Government has promised to enhance NHS assistance for individuals impacted by domestic and sexual abuse in the most extensive crackdown on violence against women in UK history. Wes Streeting announced a commitment of up to £50 million to bolster specialized services for child sexual abuse victims. In anticipation of the imminent release of the violence against women and girls (VAWG) strategy, the Health Secretary introduced a series of measures.

By 2029, a dedicated referral service for women and girls affected by violence will be operational in all regions of England, eliminating disparities in support availability. Additionally, GP surgery staff will receive training to identify indicators of domestic abuse and sexual violence. Mr. Streeting emphasized the necessity for tangible changes to support and empower victims and survivors.

The NHS, being often the first point of contact for abuse victims, is crucial in providing essential care and treatment. The government assured that these initiatives prioritize the well-being of victims, ensuring they receive specialized care and dependable support in critical times. The Government has committed to utilizing the “full power of the state” to combat VAWG.

Chris Sherwood, CEO of the NSPCC, hailed the significance of the government’s actions for child victims and survivors of sexual abuse. Similarly, Gabrielle Shaw of NAPAC praised the government’s comprehensive approach, emphasizing the importance of accessible and consistent care for survivors regardless of their location.

The implementation of Child House projects, aimed at delivering trauma-informed care by integrating various agencies, will be expanded beyond the current single project serving north London. Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips declared a national emergency regarding violence against women and girls, vowing to reduce these crimes by half within a decade. The government’s commitment is to enhance support for victims and survivors, providing them with opportunities for recovery and healing.
