These popular toy monsters, known for their colorful appearance and playful expressions, are the subject of urgent recall notices as loose parts have been identified as potential hazards for young kids.
The recall alert has been issued at a time when Labubu dolls are in high demand, becoming a sought-after trend among children, partly fueled by endorsements from celebrities like Rihanna, David Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Gemma Collins, and Olivia Attwood. Originating in China, the popularity of Labubus soared globally after K-pop star Lalisa Manobal from Blackpink shared images of them on social media.
The Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) has mandated recall notices for three Labubu products just days before Christmas. Among the flagged items is the Brown Plushie Labubu, identified as counterfeit and posing significant risks of choking and strangulation due to detachable zip pulls that could become small choking hazards for children. The affected products have been confiscated and will be disposed of, with consumers advised to discontinue their use immediately.
Another recall notice pertains to a green Labubu-style soft-filled toy with a spinning tail pull cord, which is also flagged for potential choking risks due to loose keyring attachments and feet. Similarly, a brown Labubu-style wrist strap toy has been recalled due to detachable eyes that could lead to choking incidents in children, along with concerns about easy access to a battery pack in its head. The product lacks essential age warnings and required markings, as highlighted by the OPSS.
Local distributors have removed the affected Labubu toys from sale in response to the safety alerts. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute has provided guidance for consumers uncertain about the authenticity of their Labubu dolls, advising caution when purchasing such items.
