Greenland and Denmark Leaders Reject Trump’s Acquisition Bid

Leaders in Greenland and Denmark have jointly expressed their disapproval of Donald Trump’s actions by demanding respect for their sovereignty. The US President recently appointed a special envoy to Greenland as part of his efforts to acquire the territory, a move that has sparked controversy.

President Trump has repeatedly stated that gaining control of Greenland would enhance international security. However, Greenland’s Prime Minister strongly criticized Trump for his tactics, emphasizing the importance of respecting international borders.

The Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, released a joint statement on December 22, reiterating the significance of respecting national borders and state sovereignty as fundamental principles of international law. They emphasized that Greenland belongs to its people and should not be taken over by the US, asserting the need for mutual respect for territorial integrity.

In response to Trump’s appointment of a special envoy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, the two leaders expressed their concerns over the potential implications. Landry, appreciative of the appointment, affirmed his commitment to advancing US interests in Greenland while clarifying that his role would not impact his position as Governor of Louisiana.

The Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, expressed his discontent with the appointment of the special envoy, stating that it undermines Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland. Rasmussen vowed to seek clarification from the US ambassador regarding the decision.

The European Union also weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of upholding territorial integrity and sovereignty in accordance with international law. Various European leaders, including the Swedish Foreign Minister and Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister, expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, underscoring the need to respect established borders.

While Trump has advocated for US control over Greenland, the island, with its strategic significance and autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark, remains a point of contention. Greenland’s leaders have reiterated that they determine their own future and emphasized their opposition to external interference in their affairs.

Efforts by the US to assert influence in Greenland have been met with resistance from Denmark, European allies, and Russia. The push for Greenland’s acquisition has raised concerns about potential military intervention and intelligence gathering, prompting strong reactions from global leaders in support of sovereignty and international law.
