A stepmother has been praised for “laughing” at her stepson and “ruining” the wedding after he revealed a bizarre guest rule.

The stepmother shared the wedding drama in a viral post on Reddit’s AmITheA****** group, which can be seen here, and has been viewed more than 15,000 times with people locked in debate about the fall out. The user revealed she had been married to her husband for 20 years and that her stepson Adam, 28, is due to marry his fiancé Alice, 27, at the end of the summer.

She said the family were “very excited” for the couple and many family members had key roles in the upcoming wedding such as being bridesmaids or groomsman. But she revealed the family’s excitement turned sour following an unwelcome revelation.

In the viral post, the stepmother said they all had dinner to celebrate her husband’s birthday and that their child Ellie, 13, was looking forward to going dress shopping. But Alice and Adam then shared they wanted to have a “very limited” guest list and that they only wanted to invite close friends and family.

“Pretty quickly things escalated,” she said. “The cliff notes version is that Charles asked them to clarify if they were choosing to uninvite me now or if I was never invited. Alice confirmed the latter. why? Adam said it’s because I’m not his mom.”

Following the shocking revelation, the poster’s husband said he would not be going either. She added: “Adam then turned to me and asked if I was really going to let everyone ruin his wedding on my behalf.”

The stepmother then revealed she laughed as “the entire thing was just so ridiculous” before she “promptly bawled my eyes out.” The incident has caused a rift in the family and Adam continues to say that his stepmother is not invited.

Leading wedding expert and editor at Hitched.co.uk told The Mirror the situation revealed “how emotionally complex weddings can be.” She added: “While it’s absolutely a couple’s right to choose who they invite to their wedding, the decisions they make can have long-lasting consequences, especially when there are more complex family dynamics at play.

“In this particular case, the stepmother has played a parental role for over two decades, so I can understand that excluding her would cause pain and confusion. While a wedding lasts for a day, the decisions you make around it can cause an impact for so much longer.

“For couples planning smaller weddings, clear and early communication is key. If you’re making tough decisions about your guest list, be transparent and compassionate – and do it face to face wherever possible.

“It’s important to acknowledge that it may hurt feelings and offer reassurance that the decision isn’t a reflection of love or value. When people feel blindsided, it can damage relationships that have taken years to build.

“Ultimately, weddings are about celebrating love, and bringing two families together – it’s important to weigh those things up when deciding who to invite.

Despite the stepmother admitting she laughed over the situation, many people praised her over what had happened. The post has since been commented on more than 2,000 times just four days after being posted.

Reddit user Rude-Illustrator-884 said: “Inviting someone who’s not invited to the wedding to go floral shopping with you for said wedding is the tackiest thing I’ve seen in a fat minute.” While Downtown_Tooth_4723 added: “Wow, they really hit the jackpot, invite, uninvite, and then a registry link? That’s bold. Feels like they saw you more as a gift source than a guest. You handled it way better than most would.”

User Puzzled-Gas-7842 commented: “That was just cold. OP (original poster) was fully involved and excited, then suddenly treated like she didn’t matter. No wonder the family isn’t letting it slide, Adam had to know this would blow up.” Dense_Dress_1287 posted: “Family only eh? Then I guess there are absolutely no friends attending this very small wedding – sounds like it will be under 25 people. Why is stepdad going? If you are not family, neither is he.”

According to a 2022 wedding survey by Hitched the average number of guests in the UK that year was between 82 day guests and 103 evening guests. A small wedding is typically considered to have 50 guests or fewer while a large one is believed to have more than 100 in attendance.
