The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in nearly 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today. This move coincides with the issuance of multiple winter weather warnings by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Approximately 500,000 households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.
The Cold Weather Payments have been initiated in a total of 246 postcode regions, encompassing locations such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and sections of Wales and Northern Ireland. The complete list of postcodes eligible for these payments has been released.
These payments are disbursed to individuals in England and Wales who are recipients of various benefits. In Northern Ireland, a similar scheme operates, while in Scotland, assistance for heating bills is provided annually, not tied to specific cold weather periods.
Since the start of winter, £25 payments have been activated for 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to prolonged cold conditions. The latest round of payments is expected to reach approximately 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for around 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure for today’s Cold Weather Payments is estimated at £13.3 million.
In England and Wales, a payment is triggered when an area is forecasted to experience subzero temperatures for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists are forecasting a cold spell leading into the New Year, with many regions anticipating freezing temperatures.
An estimated 3.9 million individuals qualify for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of them receiving Pensions Credit. Eligibility for these payments is based on various benefits, including Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest.
Recipients do not need to apply for these payments, as £25 will be directly deposited into their bank accounts within 14 working days. The payment reference will include the recipient’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Detailed eligibility criteria are available on GOV.UK.
The triggering of Cold Weather Payments is linked to specific weather stations, with estimated eligible households listed for each station in different regions.
