Britons are bracing for a cold snap in the upcoming weeks with temperatures expected to drop to -2C, accompanied by the potential for freezing rain and snow. Following a period of mild weather earlier in the month, conditions have turned notably colder and more unsettled, with low-pressure systems moving in from the Atlantic. While some snow flurries may be seen over higher elevations this week, it is anticipated to get significantly colder in November.
According to WXCharts’ maps, temperatures are forecasted to dip into single digits in the initial week of November and plunge below zero by November 12, particularly in Scotland where it could reach -2C. A map for midnight on November 11 indicates the likelihood of snow in central and southern Scotland, along with a section highlighted in orange indicating freezing rain.
Freezing rain poses a significant risk for driving as it can create a thin layer of ice on surfaces. Described by the Met Office as a rare form of liquid precipitation that freezes rapidly upon contact with a cold surface, freezing rain can lead to hazardous conditions such as ice-covered roads and walkways, posing dangers for transportation and aviation.
Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts the possibility of overnight fog and frost towards mid to late November. In the forecast spanning November 11 to 25, they anticipate unsettled weather initially with showers, rain, and potential strong winds across the UK, followed by a transition to drier and clearer conditions in the latter part of the month, although with intermittent fog and frost.
The early days of November are expected to bring more unsettled weather characterized by heavy rain and strong winds, with a chance of severe gales. The prevailing low-pressure systems are likely to maintain a pattern of changeable and unsettled weather, with showers or prolonged rainfall throughout the month, particularly in western regions.
Westerly or southwesterly winds are expected to dominate, resulting in above-average temperatures initially and reduced instances of overnight frost and fog compared to normal conditions. Gusty winds, including gales or severe gales, may occur intermittently, with the potential for heavy rain especially in western areas.
