A tragic incident during a routine MRI exam led to the death of a young boy. Six-year-old Michael Colombini sustained fatal injuries when a metal oxygen tank was propelled by the MRI machine’s powerful magnetic field, causing it to strike his head. The force of the canister, moving at high speeds due to the electromagnet, resulted in a fractured skull and brain injuries for Michael, who tragically passed away two days later.
The MRI procedure followed surgery for a benign brain tumor that Michael had undergone. While sedated during the imaging process, the accident occurred at Westchester Medical Center, located near New York City. The medical center’s president, Edward Stolzenberg, expressed deep regret over the incident, taking full responsibility and offering condolences to the family.
MRI scanners use magnetic forces and radio frequencies to generate detailed internal body images for medical diagnosis. While generally safe, rare accidents like this highlight the importance of proper safety protocols.
In a separate incident last year, Keith McAllister lost his life in a similar MRI accident at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, Long Island. His wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, recounted the tragic event where her husband’s necklace pulled him into the machine, causing fatal injuries. Despite safety measures requiring the removal of metal objects, Keith was allowed in with a heavy chain, leading to the devastating outcome.
The heartbroken widow described the harrowing moment when the machine unexpectedly pulled her husband in, despite efforts to free him. Tragically, Keith suffered heart attacks post-rescue and later succumbed to his injuries.
These unfortunate incidents serve as reminders of the importance of strict safety protocols and adherence to guidelines during MRI procedures to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.
