Authorities in Kenya have reported a small aircraft accident in the coastal area of Kwale, where 12 individuals are feared to have lost their lives.
The incident occurred earlier today as the aircraft was en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Reports indicate that the crash occurred in a mountainous area approximately 25 miles from the Diani airstrip, according to officials.
Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde informed The Associated Press that the passengers aboard were believed to be “all foreign tourists,” with their nationalities to be confirmed at a later time. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has initiated an investigation into the crash’s cause.
At present, the specific breakdown of crew versus passengers remains unknown. The plane is said to have crashed shortly after takeoff, igniting a fire that resulted in a charred wreckage at the crash site.
Eyewitnesses recounted hearing a loud explosion, and upon reaching the scene, they discovered unidentifiable human remains. Mombasa Air Safari, the airline involved, stated to the AP that they are cooperating with aviation authorities, promising to provide updates on the incident as directed by the regulatory body.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve, known for its wildlife and the annual migration of wildebeest from Tanzania’s Serengeti, is a renowned tourist destination.
