Reform UK may undergo a second investigation regarding alleged overspending in Nigel Farage’s previous general election campaign. The Electoral Commission is currently reviewing potential non-compliance with the law following claims investigated by Essex Police related to Mr. Farage’s bid for election in Clacton last year.
Richard Everett, a whistleblower who collaborated with the Reform leader, asserts that the party exceeded its spending limit by £9,000. However, he mentioned to the Telegraph that Mr. Farage was unaware of these discrepancies. Labour has criticized Mr. Farage for his silence on the matter, accusing him of disrespecting the British public.
In response, Labour chairwoman Anna Turley emphasized the necessity for Mr. Farage to address the allegations promptly. She stated that the public deserves assurance that neither Mr. Farage nor his party violated any laws. The Electoral Commission is currently assessing the situation to determine if further action is warranted.
Reform has refuted Mr. Everett’s claims, labeling him as a disgruntled former party member expelled earlier this year over misconduct allegations. However, Mr. Everett denies these accusations. The party maintains its innocence and anticipates clearing its name in the ongoing investigation.
Essex Police is investigating the reported misreported expenditure by a political party, following a referral from the Metropolitan Police. The Conservatives have urged the authorities to thoroughly investigate the claims made by Mr. Everett, emphasizing the importance of upholding fair and transparent election practices.
