Olympic Champion Tom Daley Opens Up About Body Image Struggles

Olympic champion Tom Daley recently shared his ongoing battle with body dysmorphia and the challenges of meeting expectations in the LGBTQ+ community. Despite his athletic physique, he admitted feeling intimidated at the gym due to perceived judgment.

In a candid interview with Radio Times, the 31-year-old diver and Celebrity Traitors actor disclosed how his husband, filmmaker Dustin Lance Black, 51, has been a pillar of support during his toughest moments. Tom emphasized the prevalence of unrealistic body standards in the gay community, acknowledging the pressure it brings.

Reflecting on his past struggles, Tom revealed that his eating disorder started at 17 after criticism from his diving director about his weight. This led to a cycle of unhealthy eating habits and self-criticism, including periods of bulimia.

Body dysmorphia, as defined by the NHS, involves excessive concern over perceived appearance flaws, while bulimia is a serious eating disorder with detrimental effects on physical and mental well-being.

After retiring from professional diving in 2024, Tom has shifted his focus to new endeavors, such as hosting Channel 4’s upcoming knitting competition series, Game of Wool.

The athlete aspires to share his journey with his two children, Robbie Ray, 7, and Phoenix Rose, 3. Recently, the family watched Tom on The Celebrity Traitors, resulting in an emotional moment when Robbie witnessed his father’s on-screen demise.

During an appearance on The One Show, Tom recounted the emotional reaction from his son and his own experience on the show. He humorously mentioned his desire to be a “Traitor” on the program.

Tom’s openness about his struggles aims to raise awareness and support those facing similar challenges. For assistance with eating disorders, individuals can contact Beat Eating Disorders at 0808 801 0677.
