In a tragic incident that shook the peaceful Thai township of Uthai Sawan, three-year-old Paweenuch Supholwong, known affectionately as “Ammy,” miraculously survived a nursery massacre. A gunman entered the nursery, claiming the lives of 36 individuals, including 24 children, while Paweenuch remained unharmed, nestled under a blanket with her classmates.
Rescuers discovered Paweenuch peacefully sleeping, the sole surviving child amidst the devastation. Her mother, Panomplai Srithong, believes the assailant spared her daughter, possibly mistaking her for a lifeless victim among the tragic scene. The attacker, identified as former police officer Panya Kamrap, had a troubled past and ended his rampage by taking his own life after killing his wife and son.
Following the harrowing event in October 2022, the community mourned the loss of innocent lives and grappled with the incomprehensible violence that shattered their sense of security. Paweenuch’s parents, who were working in Bangkok at the time, were overjoyed to find their daughter unharmed but heartbroken by the loss of her friend in the tragedy.
Local residents gathered at temples to pay respects to the victims and sought solace in rituals to honor the departed souls. Paweenuch, described as a miraculous survivor by relatives, received symbolic soul strings to call back her spirit after the traumatic experience.
The Thai government swiftly extended support to the affected families by providing financial aid and psychological assistance to cope with the aftermath of the devastating incident. The close-knit community of Uthai Sawan grappled with the profound loss of innocence and the shattered sense of security that had always defined their peaceful township.
