Islington Council in London has implemented a new speed limit of 10mph on St John Street, just north of Smithfield Market. The council, under Labour control, stated that this speed restriction will only be in effect during ongoing roadworks expected to last for six months.
Opinions on the new speed limit vary among locals. Some residents criticized the decision, expressing concerns about the impracticality of driving at such a low speed. On the other hand, there were individuals who supported the idea, noting that the area is heavily populated with pedestrians and cyclists, potentially making it safer.
A recent report by a road safety charity recommended reducing speed limits to 10mph in areas with high pedestrian traffic and to 20mph on single carriageways nationwide. While some people welcomed this suggestion, others, including a London taxi driver, opposed it, calling it “ridiculous.”
Business owners along St John Street have reported negative impacts on their businesses due to the ongoing roadworks and speed limit changes. Kayk Panch, who runs Bhavini’s Newsagent & Off Licence, highlighted a significant decline in business as a result of reduced accessibility and parking availability.
Islington Council clarified that the 10mph speed limit is temporary and aimed at facilitating the installation of a new cycle track, rain gardens, trees, and other enhancements to the street infrastructure.
