A medical tribunal heard that a married doctor engaged in sexual activity with a nurse in an operating theater while a patient was under anesthesia. The incident occurred at Tameside Hospital, where Dr. Suhail Anjum and the nurse, known as Nurse C, were discovered in a compromising situation by a colleague. Dr. Anjum left his assigned case to have sex with Nurse C in a separate operating theater, as reported by the General Medical Council representative, Andrew Molloy.
The nurse who witnessed the scene quickly reported it to her manager, leading to the investigation. Dr. Anjum admitted to the misconduct and acknowledged the potential risk to the patient. Despite leaving the hospital and relocating to Pakistan, he expressed a desire to return to his career in the UK, emphasizing that it was a regrettable one-time error. During the tribunal hearing, Dr. Anjum expressed deep remorse for his actions and the impact on his colleagues, patients, and professional reputation.
Dr. Anjum attributed the incident to personal stress related to his family’s challenging circumstances, particularly his daughter’s premature birth and his wife’s traumatic delivery. He acknowledged the toll this took on his personal life, mental well-being, and work performance at the hospital. The tribunal in Manchester will further assess whether Dr. Anjum’s professional conduct has been compromised due to the misconduct.
