“Call for Fair Sick Pay Rights Amid Cancer Battle”

At the age of 23, I received a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, impacting me significantly. The recommended treatment involved a five-week regimen of radiotherapy at a specialized youth center, necessitating a daily 40-mile commute for treatment.

Due to the draining treatment side effects and the time-consuming hospital visits, including preparation, parking, and waiting, I found it impossible to maintain my job at a prominent supermarket chain, leading to an extended leave of absence. Disappointingly, the sick pay benefits in the UK proved insufficient during this challenging period.

Initially, I received only two weeks of paid sick leave from my employer before transitioning to statutory sick pay (SSP) for several months, providing a rate equivalent to less than £3 per hour for a full-time employee like myself. This financial strain was alleviated by the support of my partner, family, friends, and organizations such as Young Lives vs Cancer.

I later discovered that many individuals, as highlighted through the Safe Sick Pay campaign, faced even more dire situations with some receiving no sick pay at all while undergoing treatment. The lack of adequate sick pay not only impacts those battling serious illnesses like cancer but also affects individuals requiring time off for minor ailments, particularly for shift workers who risk losing a significant portion of their income.

Therefore, the recent attempts by certain members of the House of Lords to impede the implementation of day one sick pay rights through the Employment Rights Bill are concerning. Denying day one sick pay rights and neglecting support for low-wage earners is unjust. These proposed changes are modest requests to ensure that individuals receive necessary support to recuperate and return to work safely, aligning with practices already commonplace in many parts of the world, including Europe.

In solidarity with other workers who have experienced inadequate sick pay, I urge the House of Lords to prioritize the passage of the bill, ushering in essential reforms towards establishing a fairer sick pay system for millions of individuals.
