Android users are facing a concerning new threat targeting their devices, as reported by security experts at Bitdefender. The Brokewell malware has been rapidly infecting devices, allowing cybercriminals to spy, steal messages, take remote control of phones, and acquire security codes for unauthorized access. This malware grants malicious actors significant control over infected devices.
The method of attack involves enticing users to click on social media advertisements promising free access to premium financial services that are usually costly. Once users click on these ads, they are prompted to download an app, leading to the installation of the malware.
Bitdefender’s analysis revealed an ongoing malicious advertising campaign that has utilized 75 harmful ads, potentially reaching tens of thousands of users in the EU. These ads, particularly on platforms like Facebook, deceive users with offers of a free TradingView Premium app for Android, delivering the Brokewell malware instead.
To prevent further victims, Bitdefender has issued advice and four rules to enhance user safety. Among these guidelines are recommendations to avoid downloading apps from unofficial sources, remain cautious of enticing advertisements, scrutinize URLs for authenticity, and review app permissions for suspicious requests.
