Amazon is set to shut down a fulfillment center in Milton Keynes, affecting 590 jobs. The closure plan includes offering employees the option to transfer to the new Amazon site in Northampton or to other facilities. The new £500 million Northampton facility is expected to open soon, initially hiring 1,400 employees and eventually expanding to 2,000.
The Amazon sortation center in Milton Keynes, a separate part of the company’s logistics operations, will remain unaffected by the closure decision. An Amazon spokesperson mentioned that the company continuously evaluates its network to align with business requirements and enhance the experience for employees and customers. The priority is to assist affected employees during the transition process.
Meanwhile, Amazon has started testing drone flights as part of its upcoming UK airborne delivery service scheduled for a 2026 launch. The company has initiated limited flights from its base in Darlington, with plans to deliver packages weighing less than five pounds within two hours to eligible customers in the area. The drones are designed to operate quietly and avoid obstacles while in flight, using advanced technology to ensure safe and efficient deliveries.
Amazon confirmed the ongoing collaboration with local authorities and aviation regulators to ensure a successful drone delivery service launch in the UK.
