A concerning alert has been issued by UK network O2, now a part of Virgin Media, regarding a sharp uptick in text message scams targeting smartphone users nationwide. These scams aim to deceive consumers into divulging personal information and money unknowingly.
According to the company, there has been a notable surge in fraudulent activities, encompassing various schemes like fake parking fines, bogus job offers, deceptive prize scams, and the notorious “Hi mum” scam. The “Hi mum” tactic, in particular, is a distressing ploy where scammers pose as a family member in need of urgent financial assistance, resulting in significant monetary losses for victims.
Virgin Media O2 has taken action by blocking over 600 million suspicious texts. Nevertheless, the network urges phone users in the UK to remain vigilant.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the evolving nature of scammers, who are leveraging current events and targeting vulnerable individuals with fraudulent offers and financial incentives.
He added, “Despite our proactive measures, including blocking millions of scam texts, it is crucial for the public to exercise caution. Always approach unsolicited calls or messages with care, refrain from sharing personal details, and report suspicious communications promptly to 7726.”
For smartphone users, it is imperative to remain alert, exercise caution before clicking on links, and refrain from responding impulsively to any messages.
Here are five types of scams to be cautious of:
1. The Emotional “Hi Mum/Hi Dad” Text Scam
