“Aldi Regains Crown as UK’s Most Affordable Supermarket”

Aldi has regained its title as the most affordable supermarket in the UK, surpassing Lidl this month. According to the latest supermarket price analysis by Which?, a basket of 75 items cost an average of £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025, making it 38p cheaper than the same basket at Lidl, which totaled £128.30 on average when utilizing its loyalty program, Lidl Plus.

In July, Lidl held the top spot as the cheapest supermarket but has now slipped to second place. The comparison included a variety of branded and own-brand items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco Clubcard members, the average cost of the 75-item basket was £142.36, while non-members paid £145.01. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent an average of £144.75, compared to £149.02 for non-Nectar cardholders.

In a larger comparison of 190 items, Asda maintained its position as the most budget-friendly supermarket. Aldi and Lidl were not part of this comparison due to their smaller product ranges. The larger Asda basket averaged £474.86, undercutting Tesco with a Clubcard by £11.03 (£485.89).

Waitrose emerged as the priciest option for both small and large shopping lists, with the smaller basket costing £172.61 – £44.69 more than Aldi – and the larger one totaling £548.14.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented, “Aldi is once again the UK’s most cost-effective supermarket in August, offering great value without the need for membership fees. Asda stands out as the cheapest non-discounter for larger grocery hauls, outperforming Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. As household expenses rise during cooler months, savvy shoppers can save up to 35% by choosing one supermarket over another.”
